Conquering The Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Packing, Shuttles & Gear Checklist

Published by DiscoverAotearoa Hiking Team • 7 min read

Tongariro Emerald Lakes Trek

Stretching 19.4 kilometers across volcanic terrain in Tongariro National Park, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is widely celebrated as one of the finest single-day hikes in the world.

Essential Preparation

Because the trail ascends above 1,800 meters, conditions can change from clear sunshine to freezing rain within minutes. Adequate gear is mandatory for safety.

  • Transport: The track is a point-to-point walk. Book shuttle transfers from Taupo or Turangi in advance.
  • Water & Food: Carry at least 2.5 liters of water per person as there are no drinkable water sources along the route.
  • Clothing Layers: Thermal base layers, fleece jacket, windproof waterproof outer shell, and sturdy hiking boots.
